Anthony Matarese Brings World Championship to USA
Anthony Matarese Jr. has become the first American ever to win the World English Sporting Championship, taking the individual Gold Medal last week on the E.J. Churchill Shooting Grounds in England. Matarese finished the regulation main event with a three-target lead and held the margin through the six-man super final shoot-off to earn the World Championship. Mike Wilgus also qualified for the super final and finished the competition sixth overall. NSSA-NSCA's Clay Target Nation magazine recently profiled Matarese as a hard-working, driven competitor and for his wide-ranging activities in … [Read more...]

Ask the Instructor: New Gun, Low Scores
New Gun, Low Scores I recently bought a sporting clays gun with 32-inch barrels, and now my scores have fallen sharply. I started out with 28-inch barrels, then moved up to 30-inch, and now with the longer barrels, I can’t seem to catch up to the target. My previous two guns were Beretta 682, and this one is a 692. I’m 6’5? and 250 pounds, so the gun does not seem too big to me. I was pretty happy with the shorter barrels but succumbed to advertising, I suppose. A big part of this is seeing the top shooters in the country with the longer barrels and trying to duplicate what they are … [Read more...]
Radulovich Prevails at Muddy U.S. Open
Rain and mud may have been the most discussed topics at the U.S. Open Sporting Clays Championship at Caney Creek Shooting Sports, but David Radulovich would disagree that almost a foot of rain was the most exciting thing that happened in Teague, Texas last week. After getting his first U.S. Open win as a Junior in 2009, Radulovich won the U.S. Open championship with a strong 197, punctuating his main event win with top spots in FITASC and 5-Stand as well. Derrick Mein finished three targets back to take the runner-up spot, breaking the three-way tie with third-place Dan Carlisle and Doug … [Read more...]

McGuire Wins His Second 2016 Regional at Northeast
If there's a formula for winning an NSCA Regional Championship, Bill McGuire has figured it out. In last week's Northeast Regional Sporting Clays Championship at M&M Sporting Clays, McGuire won his second regional of the year and fifth in just two years, giving him an early edge at his third consecutive NSCA Championship Tour title. Coming in second at one target back was Mike Wilgus, breaking a tie with Zachary Kienbaum (M1) and Brock Allen (AA1) to earn the runner-up spot. Diane Sorantino won Lady championship for both the main and FITASC events. Doug Vine had another of the weekend's … [Read more...]
NSCA Mourns Passing of Anne Cherry
The sporting clays community is grieving the loss of a familiar face at the country's most prominent events. Anne Cherry, wife of champion shooter Wendell Cherry, died of pancreatic and liver cancer on June 5. Anne regularly accompanied Wendell at sporting clays tournaments and was well-known among the shooters, their families, club personnel, and the sporting clays industry. Anne was in the hearts and minds of participants at the U.S. Open Sporting Clays Championship, as the PSCA distributed red ribbons to everyone to wear in her honor. Anne was born in Mississippi on May 18, 1953. … [Read more...]
